Dominic Rivera

Credentials:

I currently reside in West Linn, Oregon which is on the south end of the Portland metro area. I have been working professionally with various systems including Linux, Solaris, HP-UX, Windows, Mac OS X and VMware since I graduated college in 2001 majoring in Computer Science. I hold a number of certifications including VMware Certified Professional ( VCP, VCP3, VCP4), RedHat Certified Engineer, Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer, and Sun Certified Security Administrator. In 2009 I was also awarded a VMware vExpert award which was awarded to a select 300 individuals who work in the virtualization space.

Experience:

I have worked with VMware workstation since the very first public release, but I didn't start working with VMware ESX until v2.1 in early 2004. I have enjoyed my time moving systems from physical to virtual, implementing disaster recovery plans, and backup strategies. I have created many custom tools along the way to make administration easier, many of which are available on this site.

Personal System:

I often get asked what one should use for a development system, and what I use for my own development and/or studying. I actually use a variety of systems and like to make sure that I always have at least one compaq/hp system that uses a SmartArray controller because the device names are a little bit different ( /dev/cciss/c0d0 instead of /dev/sda ). For a home system I find it more convenient to use SATA disks purely because of the noise. I don't want 10k/15k RPM disks running in my home office. My home test system consitst of the following:
Dell Dimension E521
HP P400 with 512MiB BBWC
3 160G Seagate SATA-II drives in a RAID5
4G DDR2-5300 Memory

Availability

I do have a full-time job and at this point in time I'm not terribly interested in changing jobs and/or locations. Please email me if you have a need for remote administration or other consulting engagements.

Jae Ellers

Credentials:

My home is in SW Portland, Oregon, 10 minutes from downtown. I graduated from Montata State with a BS in mechanical engineering and went to work designing color printers. After realizing I liked working with new software and system hardware better than making colored dots on paper I moved into IT and started supporting Windows systems. I now have a strong background with Windows, AD, Citrix, Redhat Linux, and (of course) VMware. I received my VCP for ESX 2.x in 2005 and updated for ESX 3.x in 2007.

Experience:

I started working with Workstation 3.0. We then did the typical progression of the day, moving to GSX and verifying that this VMware thing really did work for servers before loading ESX 1.5. We have had great success with ESX since that time and have grown organically to support ESX in 5 datacenters in the US, UK, India, and Japan with storage on NetApp & HP EVA 8000s

Personal System:

I prototype new installs and test simple scenarios on ESX running on VMware Workstation 6.x. I have a variety of lab systems licensed for ESX at work where we validate new installs and test our designs, patches, and automation. Our lab systems are older discrete servers that are iSCSI connected to NetApp and FC connected to our EVA 8ks

Availability

I have a great full-time job at this point. I'm interested in local and remote short term consulting if you need me
